White Coat Ceremony

Thursday evening was the night of Spencer's white coat ceremony. It is a ritual that marks a student's transition from the study of preclinical sciences to the study and practice of clinical health sciences. It was a great moment for both us and I was so proud of him. We were lucky enough to have my parents and his aunts and uncles there with us. His uncle Ralph, who is a retired dentist, was even able to present him with his coat.

Boating

Last Monday we were invited to go boating with Spencer's older brother Lincoln and his family out on Utah Lake. It was a quiet day on the water, which is always a plus. We convinced Van to go tubing with us, although it was a really hard sell. Lincoln gave us a nice and easy ride, but I think Van's favorite part of the whole afternoon was cleaning the boat.

Dressing Up

August 9th

August 9th was one for the books. It ranks right up there with the day we fell in love, the day we were married, the day Van was born, and the day Gus was born. On August 9th, 2012, Spencer received the call that he was accepted into dental school!

While driving to work that morning, the dean of admissions at Roseman University of Health Sciences beeped through his morning conference call. He immediately hung up with his sales team and took the call with the dean. After speaking with him, he drove straight home to tell me the news. When my front door opened at 9:00 am, I was frightened to say the least. I asked him what he was doing and he said, "I got the call." "What call?" I asked. And then he showed me his phone. I was in shock. I could not believe it. Pure joy!
It's been a fast couple of weeks. Orientation started on August 14th and we were able to take a tour of the campus. It's a beautiful, new building in South Jordan, Utah. We feel lucky enough to live so close and make all of this happen so fast. School started August 20th and we'll be moving out of our current place this coming weekend. Wish us luck!

Catching Up

Earlier this month, while Spencer's sister Sharon was still in town, we spent some time doing fun things around the city. We hit up Liberty Park, the Hogle Zoo, and the new Mountview Park splash pad.
Gus also had his very first session of swim lessons during the first two weeks of August. I felt that it was important for him to start this summer, because he was showing signs of apprehension when it came to getting in the water. Much to my surprise, he took to it right away and had a great time.
I was glad Van was with me during the last class, otherwise I wouldn't have these pictures to document it.

T-ball

Van played t-ball during the month of July. It was fun for him to play with friends and learn more about the game. (Two of his friends from church were even on his team). Spencer was away for most of the season, but made it back in time to catch his last game and see him get his medal.

Spencer Turns Thirty-Three

Spencer's birthday was on July 30th, which also happened to be his first day back to work full-time. Van and I put together a little surprise for him while he was gone that day. I printed off five pictures of him from when he was younger and taped them from our parking lot to our front door. I attached a red balloon to each one and used a trail of yarn to direct him from start to finish. The boys helped me make a birthday banner that we hung in our house for the final surprise. Afterwards we went to Baskin-Robbins for ice cream. (I highly recommend the salty caramel).
