Van's Newborn Acne

On Wednesday last week Van started showing signs of newborn acne. By Thursday afternoon the left side of his face was extremely red and swollen so we took him to the pediatrician. The nurse practitioner was concerned with the swelling and told us to watch the rash for the next twenty-four hours. On Friday the redness and swelling had spread across his face. It now covered his temples, cheekbones, eyelids, and nose. We went back to the doctor and after three different physicians looked at him, they sent us to Children's Hospital in Seattle to have a specialist make sure it wasn't anything worse than acne. After spending a few hours in the hospital they concluded that it was just a severe case of newborn acne. These pictures were taken the next morning; the redness and swelling had gone down quite a bit. The acne still continues to spread and flare up at times, but we are hopeful that he'll get over it soon and grateful that it wasn't anything else.

Poor Van!! That just doesn't look comfortable. Glad to hear it wasn't anything serious.

Poor kid!

Why must some of us be plagued with acne? I hope he wasn't too uncomfortable. He's going to be so embarassed if you ever show those pictures to the girl he's dating!

Poor guy! But I bet it's more paiful for you as the mother than for him. Is it on his body too? Joshua had something similar but on his body and it was a reaction to the diary I was eating.

high frequency really means really high pitched sounds. They gave us some examples...but I don't remember. But it shouldn't really affect his speech.

I'll bet that was pretty scary for you guys. Such a relief that it's only baby acne! Do the doctors know what causes such severe cases? Is there any way to help it clear up (ie. change in diet, different lotion, etc...)?
Give Van lots of kisses from me. Acne sucks no matter how old you are!

my baby has a severe case of baby acne also. she got it at 2 weeks old and is now 3.5 weeks old. what did the docs suggest that you do? how long did it last?

It took almost a month for the acne to clear up. We were told just to wait it out and really didn't do anything for it.
